The Royal Adelaide Hospital is the largest public hospital in South Australia, accommodating over 85,000 inpatients and 400,000 outpatient visitors annually. With 800 single-patient rooms, specialized departments and research facilities, the project set high standards for lighting – each space required different levels of comfort, flexibility and wellness support.
A scalable lighting control system was needed – one that could adapt to the rhythms of patients and staff while meeting sustainability targets such as Green Star certification.
For the Royal Adelaide Hospital, installer Nilsen Networks implemented a large-scale Philips Dynalite solution. More than 45,000 DALI luminaires and 8,000 emergency lighting points were controlled via a scalable, digitally addressable system. Thanks to the DyNet backbone, all DALI universes were interconnected, allowing the entire hospital to operate as a single cohesive system. The setup supports up to 96 lighting scenes per zone and adjusts them dynamically based on time of day, season, or occupancy.
The lighting system was carefully designed with the wellbeing of patients and staff in mind. In patient rooms, tunable white lighting automatically shifts in color temperature throughout the day – a key factor in supporting circadian rhythms. Each room is equipped with an Antumbra control panel, enabling patients to adjust their environment easily.
At the management level, Dynalite offers numerous benefits. With System Manager software, the hospital has real-time visibility into occupancy levels, energy usage and system statuses. Automated emergency lighting tests and smart data analytics make maintenance more efficient and proactive.
Finally, the system contributes significantly to the hospital’s sustainability goals. Through intelligent control, occupancy sensors, daylight harvesting and integration with BMS and HVAC systems, RAH achieved a 40% CO₂ reduction and earned a 4 Star Green Star rating – making it the largest and most technically complex Green Star-certified project in Australia.
